    About Baked Sweet Potato Slices

    • Taste - You can make these roasted sweet potatoes sweet with maple syrup and cinnamon or spicy with cayenne pepper.
    • Texture - The sweet potato rounds are tender and soft.
    • Effort - You just need to to slice the potatoes, season them, then bake them.
    • Time - It takes about 10 minutes to slice and season the potatoes then about 30 minutes to bake them.

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make baked sweet potatoes, including sweet potatoes, avocado oil, seasonings of choice, salt, and pepper.
    • Sweet potatoes - Sweet potatoes are slightly sweeter and earthier than normal potatoes. We love Japanese sweet potatoes because they are nutritious and slightly sweeter than U.S. sweet potatoes.
    • Avocado oil - Avocado oil is a tasty oil to cook the sweet potatoes in.
    • Maple syrup and Cinnamon - Add maple syrup for a rich sweetness and cinnamon for a warm woodsy flavor.
    • Paprika - Paprika is a tasty and spicy alternative.
    • Garlic powder - Garlic powder provides the quintessential flavor without overpowering the other ingredients.
    • Kosher salt or sea salt - Kosher salt accentuates the other flavors.
    • Freshly Ground Black pepper - Black pepper adds a nice little spice.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Herbs - Add herbs like rosemary and thyme to make these sweet potatoes extra flavorful.
    • Miso - Add a spoonful of white miso paste for unique umami flavor.
    • Garlic - Use minced garlic instead of garlic powder for a stronger garlic flavor.
    • Parmesan - Sprinkle parmesan to make them garlic parmesan sweet potatoes.
    • Dipping sauce - Try these sweet potatoes with a dipping sauce like Greek Yogurt Ranch, Chipotle Mayo, or Spicy Kewpie Mayo.
    • Sweet potato medley - Use a combination of orange and purple sweet potatoes for a fun combination of flavors.
    • Brown sugar - Use brown sugar instead of maple syrup for a rich caramel sweetness.

    Instructions

Steps to make baked sweet potatoes, peel potatoes, slice into rounds or cubes, toss in avocado oil and seasonings, arrange in a single layer.

    • Prepare sweet potatoes - Peel sweet potatoes and slice into ¼-inch to ½-inch rounds. (Photo 1 and 2)
    • Season - Then place in a mixing bowl and add the other ingredients. Mix until all of the sweet potato pieces are coated. (Photo 3 and 4)
Steps to make baked sweet potatoes, bake potatoes and flip over halfway through until golden then serve.
    • Bake sweet potatoes - Transfer the sliced sweet potatoes to a parchment paper lined baking sheet and arrange in a single layer leaving some space between each potato. Then roast on the middle rack for 30-40 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender, flipping over halfway through. (Photo 5 and 6)

Pro tip - Leave space between the potatoes on the sheet pan to allow air flow. This will make the potatoes crispy on the edges.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I make baked sweet potato slices crispy?

In order to make the sweet potato slices extra crispy, bake them for an extra couple minutes. Just keep an eye on them because they can burn easily.

Do I need to peel the sweet potatoes before baking them?

You don't have to, but we peel them because it makes the sweet potatoes softer.

How thick should I slice the sweet potatoes for baking?

We prefer them ¼ to ½ inch so they still have bite without being too crispy or too mushy.

How do I prevent potato slices from sticking to the baking sheet?

To prevent sticking, line the baking sheet with parchment paper and make sure the slices are covered in oil and seasoning.

Tender peeled and seasoned sweet potatoes on a baking sheet.

    Cooking Tips

    • Do not throw the sweet potato peels in the garbage disposal or they will clog your drain. Compost the peels instead.
    • Keep an eye on the sweet potatoes during the last few minutes of their cooking. They can go from perfectly roasted to burnt quickly.
